Purple Necklaces

2/21/12 10:29 AM

Even though my studio was completed in June, it has taken me until now to really feel that I've fully moved in.  I spent most of my time marketing and participating in events, and was beginning to get away from my love of glass and beadmaking.  This year, I'm making a strong effort to clear my calendar for 4 days in a row each week to spend exploring glass.

After spending the last 2 years playing with silver glass (with limited success), I took a class last weekend with Hayley Tsang - the Silver Glass Queen!  I've been wanting to get those eye popping purples, and lustrous blues.

I learned that just moving my arm an inch or so can make all of the difference!

Renovation

2/9/12 9:32 AM

The Claire S Tyser Memorial man cave/guest room is nearing completion. Frank spent many weeks designing and redesigning the room, to continue the flow from the rest of the house, and not look like an addition. He did a fabulous job!

Since the new room will be painted and have a hardwood floor, itpointed up the need to have the rest of the house repainted. And, since we will have to move everything out of all the rooms, we decided to put oak floors in the back of the house as well.

When we moved in 4 years ago, there was ugly shag carpeting in the bedroom and studio, and we pulled it up and painted the concrete. It hasn't held up very well, so, as long as we are in chaos, we decided to just go all of the renovations now. Quite a mess, as you can see, but the dogs don't mind.

Black and White

1/30/12 8:39 AM

Even though my studio was completed in June, it has taken me until now to really feel that I've fully moved in. I spent most of my time last year marketing and showing my work, and was beginning to get away from my love of glass and beadmaking.

This year, I'm making a strong effort to clear my calendar for 4 days in a row each week to spend exploring glass. After spending the last 2 years playing with silver glass (with limited success), I decided to get back to basics and just use 3 colors -black, white an silvered ivory.

Working with black and white was fun! At first I did some traditional beads, the experimented with different metals and powders .In order to give the beads more interest, I blew some shards (see bubble) and created some twisties.

Here is the finished product.

The Not So Big Life

1/10/12 3:56 PM

One of my favorite books of 2011 was The Not So Big Life by Sarah Susanka.  http://www.notsobiglife.com/

Of the many wonderful pearls of wisdom I learned form this book, creating a quiet corner, just for myself, was a top priority.

Even though I have 2 beautiful studios, I always found myself at the  kitchen table for reading, doing paperwork and relaxing.  Since that is the first thing you see when you walk into our house, I always walked into a mess!

Both of my studios are total work spaces, and I couldn't imagine where I could find the space.  Then one day, I just pulled everything apart, and started from scratch. I got rid of 3 bookcases and consolidated most of my supplies into the rest of the room - and voila!  A place for myself, and I don't have to keep it neat!

January 2012

1/4/12 11:26 AM

January is one of my favorite months, particularly in Prescott.  Today was a clear, blue, sunny day, and my husband, Frank, and I took the dogs for a walk in the hills. We were looking for a way to get to the top of the mountain that we see out our window.

While driving, we happened upon an intriguing sign for Whispering Pines B&B.  They also had 2 lots for sale, so we decided to check it out.

What an amazing place!  It sits on 5 1/2 acres of beautiful wooded hills, only 9 miles from downtown Prescott.  The proprietors, Gayle and Tim Graham, graciously invited us in to take the tour the facilities, as well as the incredible grounds.  We could see the San Francisco peaks, 100 miles away!  Amazing views on all four sides, a beautiful wrap around deck overlooking the entire valley, hiking trails in the nearby National Forest, and on top of all this - they provide an upscale heart-healthy breakfast.  We'd love to stay there, even though we live 4 miles away!

Once again, this illustrates one of my favorite quotes - "If you want to give God a good laugh - tell him your plans".  What a totally unexpected pleasure!

Today - we'll look for the top of the mountain.

New Additions

12/9/11 8:33 AM

On the day before Thanksgiving, our dog, Cholla, brought home a friend.  This is particularly unusual, as she doesn't really like other dogs, and has a tendency to be very jealous.

The dog was a very tall, very skinny yellow lab, who had clearly been wearing a collar.  We decided to take him in, and try to search for his owner.  In the meantime, he totally captured our hearts.  Even our cat, Willie liked him.  We were trying to keep from becoming attached to him, because we knew someone must be missing him.

To make a long story short, we connected with his owner, who was at his wit's end.  The dog runs away constantly, and has been in doggie jail 6 times.  He felt he would be happier with us, as my husband and I are both home most of the time, and can spend lots of time with him.  So - we have officially adopted Mo (originally called Moses).

He is 10 years old, loving and intelligent, and is a wonderful addition to the family.  He passed his physical, but seems to have a poor appetite, and refuses to eat any type of dog food.  Right now he eats gizzards and hearts (yuck - I don't eat much meat, let alone organs - what we won't do for our pets).  He is going back to the vet next week to look into this.

Our other addition is the Claire S. Tyser Memorial Man Cave/Guest Room.  Named in honor of my mother, this will enable Frank to have his own space, and allow for us to actually have guests without having them sleep on the couch.  Our first guest is my sister, who will be visiting between Christmas and New Year's.  And in March, we are looking forward to having Frank's mother, Doris, stay with us, to get out of the ice and snow in Rochester, NY.

Happy Holidays to all!!

Holiday Events

11/25/11 9:16 AM

The season has officially begun, and I am so please to be participating in several holiday events.

My friend, Jo Manginelli and I will be filling the mezzanine at 'Tis Gallery on the square in downtown Prescott with handmade woven garments and glass bead jewelry. The show runs the entire month of December, and the opening will be December 9, from 5-8. This is in conjunction with Acker Night, over 100 downtown businesses featuring a variety of musicians performing in their place of business and on the Courthouse Plaza.

On December 3, I will have the pleasure of having a trunk show at Allie Ollie, in the Prescott Gateway Mall. The wide array of styles and genres they colorfully carry and display makes Allie Ollie a place where a grandmother, daughter and granddaughter can enjoy shopping together, in one store! From apparel and accessories to shoes and jewelry,
they have it all. So do come visit, we know you'll have a ball.  I will be displaying all kinds of new goodies.

My work will also be featured at the http://galleryofmodernmasters.com/, in the Hillside Plaza in Sedona.

I will be announcing another event in December in my next blog. Have a happy and safe holiday season!

Green Smoothies

11/10/11 8:59 AM

I

In my continuous quest to simplify my life and take care of my health, I've begun having a green smoothie every day. A great way to add more live greens to my diet. I'm not much of a green salad person - I always think of weeds - so this is a good alternative.

My friend, Melanie Banayat, is such a fabulous coach. She's been helping me with my business and marketing since I moved to Prescott. Melanie is now studying to become a nutrition coach. She is hoping to work one on one, providing healthy solutions for busy women. Instead of creating lists of restrictions and good and bad foods, her style is to coach clients to create a happy, healthy life in a way that is flexible, fun and free of denial and discipline. Sounds great to me!

Here is a fun video of Melanie wearing my necklace.
